Philippine Navy's Multi-Purpose Attack Craft or MPAC led the rescue efforts in Cebu

August 18, 2013- Philippine Navy's MPAC led the rescue efforts of the passengers of the ill-fated MV St. Thomas Aquinas owned by 2Go Shipping Company.

MV St. Thomas Aquinas collided with Sulpicio Express 7 in Cebu which resulted to more than 100 casualties (updated).

The MPAC or Multipurpose Attack Craft is designed by PROPMECH, an all Filipino company based in Subic.

First batch (3) of these vessels (MK1) were built in Taiwan and the second batch (3) (MK2) were built locally by our finest shipbuilders.

MPAC's first "baptism of fire" was last May 12, 2010 elections in Basilan where it was used to extract PCOS machines under heavy mortar fire from the rouge MILF rebels attempting to sabotage the election.

No less than  President Benigno Aquino III mentioned this craft on one of his SONA speeches.

"With the acquisition of more MPACs our Navy will have more impact" said the president

Philippine Navy is now in the process of acquiring 3 more MPACs.

  2. Their 1st major accomplishment was the search and rescue operations to the then ill-fated Super Ferry 9 last September 6, 2009. That was several months prior the 2010 May Elections.

    1. Vj Norz... just to correct your entry...PN never bought the right to build. The MPAC may be considered similar to the CB90 but it is a proud Filipino design and that design was even enhanced in the Mk II. The design is owned by PROPMECH with the PN as recipient of the actual units. The MK II was a collaborative effort of design improvement made by and between PN and PROPMECH. That is for the record and for history book. In my position then in the Navy, our office facilitated the completion of both MK I and MK II projects in record and contract time. - The Director, Navy Modernization Program Office. :)

  4. If others can do it, why can't we? The MPAC is a living testimony about the ingenuity, expertise and world class caliber of our very own ship builders and designers. This is one of the many reasons why Hanjin chose to put up their huge facility here.

Maybe Pnoy and the DND top brass should consider pouring in a major chunk of the AFP modernization budget in developing and building our navy's patrol boats right here in our own backyard instead of buying second hand ships worth billions of pesos from other countries.
